Mercedes Benz 320e AMG 3.2 s6 24v (2003 - to date) Stereo is a Kenwood (face-off) radio/cassette unit with a 10 disc autochanger in the boot, Pioneer speakers and I recently added the 100w sub-base tube from my Golfs (prior to the V5) but the effect is slightly muted due to the saloon design and the fact that the petrol tank is situated behind the backrest of the rear seat (a fact many people find out when they mount a big amplifier in the boot by drilling holes through, what looks like the rear seat support body panel!!!!)
Volkswagen Golf 2.3 v5 (2001 - to date) Mk.4 improvements such as a good climate control system, dial control sunroof, and, of course, the narrow-angle transverse V5 engine. Sounds good, and goes quite well. BlauPunkt Gamma radio/cassette with single in-dash CD unit, stock VW, with standard speakers. By the time this car was built the automotive OEMs were taking in-car sounds a bit more seriously.
Golf GTi 2.0 8v (1997 - 2001) A great improvement for comfort and acceleration - was not the fastest Mk.3 Golf by any means but quite insurance friendly.
Golf 1.6 Driver (1990 - 1997) This is the Mk.2 GTi look-alike but with 1.6 carb. engine (later models were 1.8). The stereo was initially a stock VW head unit, but I changed is for a remove-and-carry Pioneer unit which I had used in the previous car (after the Sharp unit was nicked on Mile End Road, East London). I never quite understood why the 'driver' version had driving lamps, big wheels and GTi body trim but the rev. counter was replaced by an analogue clock ?
Golf 1.6 GL (1987 - 1990) Bigger, faster and 5 speed even including a light in the boot and glovebox (luxury!). I also fitted a Sharp radio/cassette player, the one with a flip-down graphic equaliser, and Pioneer retro-fit front speakers with rear speakers mounted on a "solid board" rear parcel shelf with an independant 100w sub bass tube. Other clever(!) ideas included bucket seats and a 12 inch steering wheel but it was heavy to park (no power steering) after that. The picture is taken in High Eldwick, on the moor above Bingley, West Yorkshire.
Polo Coupé 1.3 (1985 - 1987) This car was very good for the twisting roads of Ilkley Moor as it had over-width tyres for its power and weight. The stereo installation was quite interesting in this car as the, Pioneer aftermarket, front door speakers had to be fitted inside the door bins which muffled the sound so I wired extra, Panasonic, component tweeters and mounted them on the dash. I also fitted a Sparkomatik AT alarm system with infra-red activation key. The picture is taken in the QMWC halls of residence car park in South Woodford, London.
